Project Lead: Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)

What is the project?

RSPB is working with local farmers to protect and improve habitats for wading birds; this is being achieved through the Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) and funding from the Heritage Lottery.

What will the project achieve?

Record and assess the significance of breeding wader strongholds
Habitat improvements such as wader scrapes and vegetation management
Volunteering opportunities and Demonstration events
Interpretation and bird viewing opportunities

What has been done so far?

  • Tomintoul Bird Hide has been constructed and is accessed from the Field Of Hope Car Park at Tomintoul.
  • Wader surveys have been completed for 2017 and 2018.
  • Machinery has been purchased that will be available from Autumn 2018 for farmers and land managers in the Tomintoul and Glenlivet area to cut rushes and manage vegetation to create and improve breeding habitat for wading birds.
